In favor of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, repealing the Missouri Compromise. Struggled with alcoholism.

1857 - 186115)     James Buchanan A Northerner with Southern sympathies (a doughface), his inability to impose peace on sharply divided partisans on the brink of the Civil War has led to his consistent ranking by historians as one of the worst Presidents.

1865 - 186917)     Andrew Johnson Favored the White South. His vetoes of civil rights bills embroiled him in bitter disputes. Impeached in 1868, charged with violating the Tenure of Office Act, but he was acquitted by a single vote.
